Blue Mountain Elementary is continuing to brand itself as a progressive school as well as a school that is firmly rooted in and governed by biblical principles. We have a unique twist on the buzz in education today. Last year we used 2 “S” words: Scripture and Science. This year we added one more “S” which stands for Service. S3.T.R.E.A.M2 is Blue Mountain Elementary’s initiative for academic excellence. It is an expanded version of STEM. The acronym stands for Scripture, Science, Service, Reading, Engineering, Art, Mathematics, and Music.
Blue Mountain Elementary makes a concerted effort to keep the SCRIPTURES, God’s Word in the forefront of our student’s minds. We also focus on what some call, God’s second book, SCIENCE and nature. We are always open to ways we can be of SERVICE to others for God. We believe exposing students to various tools of TECHNOLOGY, like computers, iPads, e-readers, and apps early on is important, but it is only through guided learning that these tools become an important part of education. We believe in the whole-child approach to teaching children about technology; making connections to real-world activities. Teachers ask strategic questions to guided learning, and as elementary school teachers, they cannot over emphasize the importance of READING. It is the backbone of all learning and as such receives special attention. If you’ve ever watched children at play, you know they are fascinated with building things – and with taking things apart to see how they work. In other words, children are natural-born engineers. When children engineer in a school setting, research suggests positive results in several areas, particularly in the application of what they know about science and math.
At Blue Mountain Elementary ENGINEERING takes the form of First Lego League robotics in grades 5-8 and building with K’nex in grades 1-4. These learning activities are based on real-world technologies and problems. It helps children see how disciplines like math and science are relevant to their lives. Blue Mountain Elementary understands what studies show – that there is a correlation between ART and other academic achievements. A report by American for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. At BME we encourage students to master the basics and create a spark of imagination in problem solving skills, logical thinking and so much more with strong standards driven MATHEMATICS curriculum. MUSIC education benefits our students by helping them develop areas of the brain that involve language and reasoning. Students think creatively and solve problems, achieve higher grades, and tend to develop a healthy self-esteem through self-expression. Students conquer fears and learn through consistent practice that risks and hard work often pay off in the end.
This acronym is a major part of the branding of our school.
